First Aid certification in Australia — what you need and how to get it

First Aid certification is one of the most versatile qualifications a casual worker can have. It's required in many industries and valued in virtually all of them.

The main First Aid qualifications

HLTAID009 — CPR only. Takes 3-4 hours. Needs to be renewed annually.

HLTAID011 — Provide First Aid (the most common comprehensive qualification). Covers CPR plus management of burns, wounds, fractures, anaphylaxis and unconsciousness. Takes 1 day. Valid for 3 years.

HLTAID012 — For childcare and education workers. Valid for 3 years.

Who requires First Aid certification? Required by law for childcare workers, construction site supervisors in some states, and registered nurses for CPR. Strongly preferred for personal trainers, event staff, sports coaches, and camp staff.

Where to get certified St John Ambulance, Australian Red Cross, and many private providers. Both online (theory) and face-to-face (practical) components are required for HLTAID011.

Cost HLTAID011 typically costs $80-$180. CPR renewal is usually $40-$80.
