How to make a great first impression in a new casual role

Every new casual role is essentially a working interview. Here's how to make your first shift count.

Arrive 10 minutes early Not on time. 10 minutes early. This gives you time to get oriented, find your supervisor and be ready to work at the scheduled start time.

Dress appropriately and come prepared Follow the dress code exactly. Bring a pen and notepad. Some industries have tools you're expected to bring — confirm beforehand.

Ask for a briefing if you're not given one Politely find your supervisor and ask: "I've just started, could someone give me a quick briefing on how things run here?" This shows initiative, not ignorance.

Ask questions at the right time Don't pepper your supervisor with questions during a busy period. Watch and learn first. Ask questions during a natural pause or break.

Be helpful during quiet moments Don't wait to be asked during quiet periods. Identify what needs doing and do it.

Follow up the next day A message saying "Thanks for having me, I really enjoyed the shift, happy to come back" is remembered. Most casuals don't bother. The ones who do get called first next time.
