How to negotiate your casual hourly rate in Australia

5 min read·1 July 2025

Many casual workers accept the first rate offered. Here's how to negotiate effectively and know what you're worth.

Most casual workers never negotiate their pay rate. They either don't know they can, or they don't know how.

Know the minimum first Before you negotiate, know the legal minimum for your role. Find your Award's minimum rate using the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay Calculator. Negotiating from a position of knowing the minimum gives you confidence.

Research market rates The casual rate in your area and industry is a range, not a fixed point. Check job listings on CasualHire to see what rates are being offered.

Time your negotiation right The best time to negotiate is before you've accepted the role. If you're already employed, the next natural opportunity is after demonstrating your value for 2-3 months.

Make the case with specifics Vague requests get vague responses. Try: "Given my 3 years of café experience and RSA certification, I was expecting $32/hr rather than $29/hr. Is that something you can work with?"

Non-monetary negotiation If the employer can't move on base rate, consider negotiating on guaranteed minimum hours, preferred shifts, or flexibility on start times.
